Therapy for Complex PTSD
Complex PTSD is differentiated from PTSD in that the trauma and distress has become much more globalized. Everyday life can feel almost intolerable. Untreated trauma begets more trauma, and complex PTSD is a series of traumas that are built upon other traumas, that may have their origin in early childhood events.
When the original trauma hasn’t been treated properly, the person internalizes these negative patterns. Typically, there is a lot of self-blaming and shaming that can lead to unconsciously attracting and repeating abusive situations or people that then reinforce past traumas. That’s why choosing the right therapy (and right therapist) from the start is so crucial.
The work of treating complex trauma is a step-by-step process which involves a very structured approach to breaking up the maladaptive patterns and building a new foundation for living.
This process safely brings in new awareness and helps in permanently overcoming self-destructive patterns.
